ERMI Flexionater and Extensionater

Coverage decision

L&I does not cover the ERMI Flexionater and the ERMI Extensionater devices, due to the absence of published literature showing safety and effectiveness.

The ERMI devices are intended to increase range of motion after injury or surgery. These devices use hydraulic or pneumatic technology to allow for Patient Actuated Serial Stretch (PASS). The patient-controlled load and quick release mechanisms permit a patient to apply up to 500 ft-lbs of torque for 1 to 5 minutes of stretch, followed by joint recovery until 15 minutes elapses. The duration of use is 4 to 8 times per day for approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
