Coverage decision

L&I covers at-home cervical traction units for rental or purchase. No prior authorization is required. Examples of covered devices include the traditional over-the-door unit, as well as newer Glacier Cross' Pronex and Saunders' HomeTrac units.

Indications

Home cervical traction is typically prescribed for persistent musculoskeletal pain that is relieved by a trial of traction in the clinical setting.

Medically reasonable goals include:

• Reduction in pain or spasm frequency.
• Increased range of motion.
• Improved function.

The following conditions may benefit from at-home cervical traction:

• Disc herniation.
• Pinched nerve.
• Cervical radiculopathy.
• Neck muscle spasm.
• Whiplash.
