TUMWATER Some waded into frigid waters, others raced against the flames of burning vehicles but all of them provided critical aid when it was most needed and, later this month, they will all be honored for their life-saving efforts.

In all, 40 men and women are to receive the Governor's Lifesaving Award and will be featured guests at the 60th Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Conference on Sept. 28 and 29 at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center.

The conference, sponsored by the Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board and the Department of Labor & Industries, includes several safety demonstrations, workshops, and special events such as the 14th Annual Forklift Rodeo and the 38th Annual Poletop Rescue Competition.

The Lifesaving Awards are presented on the first day of the conference during the opening ceremony. Recipients are selected by an independent committee of the conference advisory board comprised of business and labor representatives.

This year, those receiving the honor include an Edmonds school cafeteria worker who saved a young girl from choking, a group of workers in University Place who rescued a man washed down a sewer line, a utility crew in Aberdeen who happened upon a burning house, and a Spokane man who helped rescue a car crash victim from a burning vehicle.
