Tumwater – Saving a drowning child from Lake Washington was all in a day's work for three construction workers. Other people rescued critically injured victims from car wrecks, provided first aid, administered CPR or performed the Heimlich maneuver while on the job.

They're among the 27 workplace heroes and heroines who will be honored next week during the Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Conference in Tacoma for their life-saving efforts.

They'll be featured guests at the conference (www.wagovconf.org), on Sept. 19 and 20 at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center. All were engaged in their normal workday when they saw someone's life in danger and rushed to provide critical aid.

The conference, sponsored by the Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board and the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), includes safety demonstrations and workshops featuring the latest technologies, innovations and strategies in safety and health, and special events like the 20th annual Forklift Rodeo and the Poletop Rescue Competition. Captain Jim Wetherbee, a former NASA astronaut, will be the keynote speaker.

The awards for performing “hands-on” aid in saving a life will be presented by KOMO 4 TV Anchor Denise Whitaker at a special luncheon on Sept. 20. Recipients are selected by a conference advisory board committee made up of business and labor representatives.

People can attend the luncheon separately or as part of the conference. The luncheon costs $25; a limited number of tickets are available. There is also limited free audience seating available.

A complete list of the award recipients and a description (2.85 MB PDF) of their life-saving actions is available on the L&I website, or can be obtained by contacting L&I Public Affairs at 360-902-5413.

Space is still available at the conference. For more information about the conference, visit www.wagovconf.org.
