TUMWATER — Prometheus energy of Redmond, a supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), customers, has become the fourth company in Washington state to participate in the Safety Through Achieving Recognition Together (START) program.

START is administered by the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) and is modeled on a federal program. It recognizes workplaces with exemplary safety records that have shown a commitment to health and safety at work.

Staff from L&I presented a plaque to the company in a ceremony in Redmond on July 17. The award recognized Prometheus Energy's commitment to safety and acknowledged the company's safety efforts, management commitment to safety for employees and customers, prevention of workplace injuries and illnesses, and cost savings from reduced workers' compensation and medical expenses.

Matt Barclay, Prometheus' Director of LNG supply, and Swati Shastri, Health, Safety, Security and Environment Manager, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

"It is a privilege and honor to accept this award on behalf of Prometheus Energy. Our goal is to have a positive impact on our communities, employees and customer operations while keeping safety our number one priority," said Barclay.

Employers participating in START must have an injury rate below their industry average for at least one year and allow L&I safety and health experts to visit the work site and review workplace hazards, examine safety and health programs, and interview workers and managers.

While the most important benefit of START participation is a safer workplace, improved safety can also lead to lower workers' compensation rates. In addition, work sites that earn START certification are exempt from routine visits by L&I compliance officers.
