| ROOFER |
The Work
Workers install new roofs and repair and remove old roofs using a variety
of materials. They cover roofs with wood shingles, composition, shingles,
asphalt and gravel, slate, tiles and single-ply materials. The work is
conducted on both commercial and residential buildings.
Working Conditions
Roofers usually work outside on top of structures, but sometimes work inside
or below ground level. The work is physically demanding and requires
heavy lifting, climbing, bending and squatting, with a significant risk
of injury from falls. The work is performed in all weather conditions.
It is often very hot. There may be periods of unemployment between jobs,
with jobs lasting only nine to ten months a year.
The Apprenticeship
This program requires 3,000 4,900 hours of on-the-job training, and 144 hours
per year of supplemental classroom instruction.
