Cosmopolis pulp mill earns state safety award

TUMWATER - The state Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) will present Weyerhaeuser Co. Cosmopolis Pulpmill its "Meritorious Achievement Award" July 20, 2000, for reaching a workplace safety milestone.

The mill earned the distinction for working more than 1 million hours without a workplace accident that resulted in an employee losing time off the job - since November 1998.

Rudy Arellano, regional administrator for L&I, will present the award at 2 p.m. at the company's address, 1201 First St., Cosmopolis.

The Weyerhaeuser Co. Cosmopolis Pulpmill self-insures for its workers' compensation coverage, - also known as industrial insurance. Labor & Industries provides oversight to about 400 self-insured employers who meet financial requirements and mandated benefit levels.

Weyerhaeuser Co. opened the pulp mill in Cosmopolis in 1957. The mill produces sulphite pulp used in plastic products, including film and toothbrushes. The mill employs 315 workers.
