Panel on Ergonomics will meet
July 19, from 1 to 5:45 p.m., and July 20, from 8 to 11:30 a.m., at the Marriott
Hotel SeaTac, 3201 S. 176th St. in SeaTac. Public comments are welcome from 5 to 5:45 p.m.
on July 19.
The panel, convened at the direction of Gov. Gary Locke, is reviewing efforts by the Department of Labor & Industries to implement the workplace ergonomics rule adopted in May 2000. The rule requires employers to protect their employees from work-related injuries such as back strain, tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome.
For most of the two-day session, the panel will meet in subcommittees to assess progress in three areas:
- Are educational materials widely available?
- Are rule requirements understandable and proposed enforcement policies fair and consistent?
- Are demonstration projects successful?
The requirements of the ergonomics rule phase in over six years, beginning July 1, 2002.
