Tri-County Truss plant in Burlington receives state safety recognition

TUMWATER — The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) said today it is awarding a prestigious workplace-safety award to the Burlington plant of Tri-County Truss. It is the first plant of its kind in the state to receive the award.

The award is part of L&I’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), which has designated the Tri-County Truss plant as a STAR site. The designation means that the company has reached the highest level of workplace safety. It recognizes the company’s management commitment and employee participation in an ongoing safety and health program, and means it successfully passed an L&I audit and extensive onsite review.

“Safety is a core value at our company, and we take a proactive approach that involves all employees doing their part to make sure no one gets hurt on the job,” said Gary Lund, Tri-County Truss general manager. “This award means a lot to us because it validates the commitment we have to safety.” Tri-County employs 132 people and specializes in engineered wood roof and floor trusses.

“Tri-County Truss is a STAR-level site because of their daily focus and commitment to safety and the partnership between management and employees. This level of achievement is a great accomplishment and we feel privileged to have been able to work with them,” said Judy Schurke, L&I director. “Other companies in Skagit County should consider the VPP program, because it’s good for company morale and for helping keep everyone safe at work.”

Only 2,000 work sites, out of more than seven million nationwide, have received a VPP award. The program is run by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA), but administered in Washington by L&I’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). In Washington, 28 companies have achieved the VPP STAR-level award.

Mel James of DOSH will present a plaque and flag commemorating the VPP award at a June 19 ceremony at Tri-County Truss’ Burlington plant.
