Registration open for annual worker safety and health conference

TUMWATER – Watch a demonstration on exiting a big rig safely, learn about fall protection, or cheer on the contestants in the annual poletop rescue and forklift rodeo competitions at the 59th annual Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference.

Registration is now open for the conference, held this year on Sept. 29 and 30 at the Spokane Convention Center. This year’s theme is "Safety and Health – Words to Live By.”

The two-day event is one of the largest of its kind in the nation and regularly draws workers, employers, and safety and health professionals. It is sponsored by the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board and the Department of Labor & Industries with support from industry partners.

In 1949, after learning that nearly as many Americans died in the defense industries as all of those killed in the battles of World War II, President Harry Truman urged state governors to sponsor conferences on workplace safety and health to reduce on-the-job injuries and deaths. Washington state has held an industrial safety and health conference nearly every year since then.

The conference opens with the presentation of the Lifesaving Awards, which recognize people whose heroic acts helped save a life this past year. Last year, 29 people were honored for their lifesaving actions.

This year, the conference will include a Demo Hall, where exhibitors can offer full-scale demonstrations of their safety products and, in some cases, a hands-on experience for conference attendees.  There will also be a traditional Exhibit Hall with more than 70 exhibitors.

The 35-plus workshops will cover topics ranging from fall protection and respirators to workplace violence and distracted driving. The conference will also include the 37th annual Poletop Rescue Competition and the 13th annual Forklift Rodeo.

Registration is $160 per person through Aug. 31. From Sept. 1 – 28, the fee is $180. At the door, registration is $200. Groups of 10 or more are provided a $50 discount per attendee. The price for students and apprentices is $25 no matter when they register. On-line registration is available until Sept. 28.

Registration forms are available at www.wagovconf.org/registration.htm. For registration information, call 206-349-5913. For conference information, call toll free 1-888-451-2004. TDD users call 1-360-902-5797.
