L&I to host daylong maritime safety seminar

TUMWATER – A waterfront dock busy with cranes, trucks and forklifts can pose many hazards for workers, which is why the maritime industry works together to present the annual Maritime and Waterfront-related Activities Seminar.

This year, the seminar will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Tumwater headquarters of the Department of Labor & Industries. The event is sponsored jointly by L&I and the Governor’s Industrial Safety & Health Conference Advisory Board.

The goal of the seminar is to reduce injuries among maritime workers. The seminar will feature workshops on wire and rope rigging, fall protection, confined space awareness and accident investigations. An industry Q&A session will feature panelists from the maritime industry, L&I and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Registration is $55 per person or $45 per person in groups of five or more. Registration on the day of the event will be $65 per person. To register online, visit www.regonline.com/gishab-maritime.

On Oct. 19, the day before the seminar, paid attendees can also join the OSHA 7617 – Marine Terminals workshop, a 10-hour program that provides safety and health training to maritime workers. The OSHA workshop will emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention.

The seminar is just one of the activities organized throughout the year by the board and L&I to promote workplace safety. Other activities include Agriculture Safety Day, Construction Safety Day and the annual Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference.
