NIOSH ALERT: "Fire Fighting Hazards During Propane Tank Fires" (WISHA Cover Letter)

Dear Interested Party:

This letter is to inform you of potential hazards related to your industry. This information could be helpful to you in protecting your employees from fire fighting hazards during propane tank fires.

We encourage you to read the information and follow the recommendations for prevention that it contains.

Specifically, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is warning fire departments and other emergency services about the risk of boiling liquid expanding vapor explosions or BLEVE, during firefighting activities involving propane tanks.

If you have questions regarding safety and health or questions about ensuring your worksite is in compliance with the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), please contact the local L&I service center nearest you and ask to speak with someone in WISHA Consultation Services.
