Periodic Testing

Various conveyances in buildings in the state of Washington are required to have periodic testing in accordance with ASME A17.1 Elevator Code to ensure they meet safety and maintenance requirements.

The Department of Labor & Industries Elevator Section will, during our annual inspection, determine that all applicable code required tests have been completed on your conveyance(s). We will do this by placing a "Test Log" form on the wall in your conveyance machine room to be used by your elevator maintenance company to track such tests. The "Test Log" denotes the tests that you are required to have completed periodically on your particular conveyance(s). Follow the link below to find a list of the types of conveyances that require a "Test Log" and their applicable rules, periodic tests, tags, and seal requirements as shown on the "Test Log."

Note, not all tests on the "Test Log" may apply to your conveyance(s). Your elevator service company or our office can help you determine which tests are applicable.

You may also have a conveyance that does not require a "Test Log." Follow the link below to find a list of the types of conveyances that do not require a "Test Log" and their applicable rules, periodic tests, tags, and seal requirements as shown on the "Test Log".

No Test Log Required Listing

Here are samples of "Test Logs," for both the  traction (cable) elevators (blue) (MS Word) (PDF) and for hydraulic elevators (yellow) (MS Word) (PDF). Please review the one that applies to your conveyance. Listed and numbered at the top of each form are the types of tests needed and at the bottom is how often each test needs to be done along with the applicable ASME 17.1 rule. Years are listed on the left side of the form to assist in tracking the dates the tests are performed. In the first example provided above on the yellow Hydraulic "Test Log", annual test #15 (relief valve setting) was completed by XYZ Elevator Co. on 3/27/2000. Since this was an annual test, there would be entries for each of the following years as tests are completed. In example #2 on the blue "Test Log" for Traction (cable) elevators, test #4 (Terminal Speed Limiting Device), a five-year test, is listed as completed by XYZ Elevator Co. on 3/27/2000. Similarly, there would be entries in the appropriate years for each of its subsequent tests as well.

Please remember that qualified personnel must complete all tests.

It will be your responsibility to ensure that all applicable tests are completed timely for your type conveyance(s). If on a subsequent annual inspection (after the Test Logs are in place) our inspector finds an applicable test not completed, it will be cited as a violation and you are subject to a penalty until you are in compliance.
