Experienced/Trade Positions

Occupational safety inspector

Bring your trades work experience to determine if employers are complying with the applicable safety and health standards. Our safety inspectors are dedicated to the safety, health, and security of Washington's 3.3 million workers.

Investigator

Use your research and investigative skills to help prevent abuse of the workers' compensation system and protect the economic vitality of Washington State by investigating allegations of fraud, theft, or other inappropriate activities. In this position, you will directly support the agency's strategic goal of helping honest workers, businesses, and providers by cracking down on the dishonest ones.

Industrial relations agent

Utilize your technical knowledge of prevailing wage as an industrial relations agent! In this role, you'll provide statewide technical expertise on compliance, education, and enforcement of prevailing wage. If you have specialized knowledge of state labor laws when conducting industry-specific consultation and investigations for employers, this could be a great role for you!

Auditor

Bring your strong people skills and accounting education to safeguard the safety and health of the workforce by ensuring that employers carry industrial insurance and pay the correct amount of industrial insurance premium as it relates to the assigned risk classification(s) for their business. 

Vocational services specialist

Use your professional vocational experience and knowledge to educate and assist employers in setting up return-to-work programs, providing return-to-work assistance to help keep employees working or returning employees to work at the earliest time possible following an industrial injury. In this position, you will support the state's economic well-being by assisting employers to return injured workers to work as quickly and safely as possible.

WorkSource Career Fairs

L&I attends career fairs hosted by WorkSource of Washington. These events are the first Wednesday of every month in the WorkSource Thurston County office, 1570 Irving St. SW, Tumwater, WA 98512.

Hiring Process

Hiring Process at L&I

Phase 1 (2 – 3 weeks)

Application: We require a resume and cover letter for all applications. Some may have additional requirements, such as transcripts, typing tests, licenses, certifications, and so forth. These will be explained in the job posting.

Minimum qualification screening: Once we receive your application, we'll review it for the minimum required qualifications based on work experience, completed application, resume, and your responses to the supplemental questions. Those applications that meet the minimum qualifications and have all of the required items will be referred to the hiring manager for review.

Hiring manager application review: Application materials will be assessed to determine top candidates. Qualified applicants will be reviewed by the hiring manager. Top applicants will be contacted for next steps, which could be phone interviews, an assessment, or an interview.

Phase 2 (up to 2 weeks)

Interview: Typically, you'll be interviewed by a panel. You'll be provided with further details about the position you've applied for and information about the division and agency as a whole. You'll have the opportunity to discuss things such as your employment history, accomplishments, and qualifications. You'll also be asked some questions about your technical skills related to the job.

Follow-up interviews: There may be more than one round of interviews depending on the position. This process can take an additional 14 days.

Phase 3 (up to 1 week)

Reference check: If you are one of the top candidates after the interviews, we'll contact current and former supervisors and/or professional associates to gauge your past performance in a professional work environment. This is a requirement, so please be prepared to provide at least 3 professional references. At this time, references should be made aware that they will be contacted via phone or email.

Background check: If you have successfully completed all of the previous steps, we will complete the background check. You may be offered a position contingent on the results of the background check and/or personal file review; at this time, tentative start date and salary negotiations will take place.

Prior to a placement in this position, a background check, including criminal history record will be conducted. Information from your background check will not necessarily preclude employment, but will be considered in determining your suitability and competence to perform the requirements of the position.

In the event that you have a conviction identified through the background check process, you will have the opportunity to explain the situation to the assistant director of the Office of Human Resources. They will discuss the situation and its relevance to the role you are being considered for. If the reason you have a conviction on your record has no relevance to the position, you will remain in consideration for the opportunity.

Each role within L&I may have a different background check requirements. In the event you have been removed from consideration in the past due to a conviction, other opportunities may still be available.

Personnel file review (for current/former state employees): If you are one of the top candidates after interviews, we will contact your current or former state employer to conduct a personnel file review.

Phase 4 (up to 1 week)

Final offer: Upon the final offer, we will complete any other pre-employment required screenings, such as typing, bilingual, or code signal assessments. These assessments are based on position and will be identified in the original posting as required. At this time, references will also be checked.

Insurance coverage

At L&I, life and basic long-term disability and accidental death and dismemberment coverage is employer paid. Employees can also enroll in supplemental coverage with low rates as well.

An employee enrolling in optional life insurance coverage who is in the 30 – 34 age range, for example, pays $0.034 per $1,000 of coverage. A $100,000 policy would cost that employee approximately $3.40 per month, depending on tobacco usage. If the employee signs up during their initial new-hire phase, that coverage is offered without evidence of insurability.

State employee health coverage includes medical and dental coverage, with dental provided at no additional cost to the employee or their family. State rates are pre-determined and do not change during the year.

Paid leave

Above accrual rates are for a full-time employee. Vacation days, sick days, personal holidays or personal leave days vary by private employer. All private employers are now required to provide sick leave as outlined in Washington's Paid Sick Leave law.

Retirement and deferred compensation

Retirement coverage through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) is very substantial. Employees can elect to participate in PERS 2 with an employee contribution rate of 6.36% of their monthly earnings to their retirement account, or they can elect to participate in PERS 3 with an employee contribution rate between 5% – 15% of their monthly earnings.

L&I pays 9.39% into the employee’s retirement account each month. DRS also provides an option for the employee to participate in a deferred compensation plan, an additional option for retirement savings. Private industry retirement benefits vary by employer.

Capstone is branded L&I's leadership program designed to foster personal and professional leadership development of high-potential employees. The program includes instructor-led learning modules and seminars, participant engagement, and small-group work.

Office of Continuous Improvement

The Office of Continuous Improvement serves as the agency's enterprise resource, related to all continuous improvement training courses through the Continuous Improvement Academy.

The academy offers instruction to the successful deployment of improvement efforts, including standard work for practitioners, mentorship models, and serves as the centralized agency resource for continuous improvement skill development. Offerings include Lean Six Sigma certification courses that are progressive, competency-based, and offer tangible growth and development benefits.

Statewide training

The Department of Enterprise Services offers a variety of training opportunities to all public-sector employees. Employees can contact the Office of Human Resources for more information on this training.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Employees may seek confidential, professional help with personal or work-related problems through the program. There is no charge for assessment or assistance. Services are available statewide.

Tuition Reimbursement Program

L&I has offered tuition reimbursement for more than 20 years, supporting hundreds of employees in achieving their academic goals.

In the spirit of continuous improvement, the program has evolved over the years to best meet employee needs by:

  • Expanding the budget to meet the demand
  • Removing credit hour caps on reimbursement amounts
  • Including fee costs in program eligibility

Tuition reimbursement is a cornerstone of Goal 5 to support the retention and engagement of our diverse staff.

Wellness 360°

Washington Wellness is a statewide initiative to improve the health of state employees, retirees, and their family members. L&I's Wellness coordinator implements activities such as seasonal wellness campaigns, health awareness and education, live events, and coaching.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Public Service Loan Forgiveness is a federal program that forgives the remaining balance on direct loans for individuals after they have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full time for an eligible public employer, such as L&I.

Commute trip reduction

While telecommuting is an option for many L&I positions, commute trip reduction programs may offer information, promotional prizes, incentives, subsidies, preferential parking, and other rewards to state employees using alternate commute modes to get to work. These benefits support employee and agency efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, offer a unique benefit to employees, and encourage employee wellness through walking and biking commute alternatives.
