Specialty electricians in single employer programs
Passed during the 2025 legislative session, RCW 49.04.305 concerns single-employer general electrical apprenticeship programs with apprentices who already hold a specialty electrician certificate. Under certain circumstances, an employer can work an apprentice in their specialty, in addition to providing on-the-job apprenticeship training. When requirements are met, the employer may be exempt from needing to change the apprentice’s status.
For eligible employers choosing to implement the new process, L&I created two related forms:
- Notice to Apprentice (F100-537-000) - employers may use the form to meet the annual notice requirement.
- Quarterly Hours Attestation Report (F100-536-000) - employers must use the form to submit the required quarterly reports when using the exemption.
Alternatively, eligible employers that choose to not use the new process may still work their general electrical (01) apprentice under their specialty electrician certification but will need to change the (01) apprentice's status to "suspended" while the apprentice works under their specialty certification. Their status may be returned to "active" when the apprentice resumes on-the-job training for their general electrical (01) electrical apprenticeship.
