Becoming a medical gas piping installer

Medical gas piping systems deliver oxygen, nitrous oxide, high-pressure nitrogen, compressed air, and vacuum systems in hospitals, medical clinics, dentist offices, etc. To work in the medical gas piping trade, you must be endorsed as a medical gas piping installer and maintain an active Washington State journey level plumber certification. Plumber trainees can work in the medical gas piping trade under the 100% direct supervision of a medical gas piping installer, as long as they have taken or are currently enrolled in a medical gas training course.

Endorsement requirements

Medical gas piping installer (MG01) is qualified to work on medical gas piping systems that deliver oxygen, nitrous oxide, high-pressure nitrogen, medical compressed air, medical vacuum systems, etc.

To become a medical gas piping installer in Washington, you must:

  • Have an active Journey Level Plumber (PL01) certification.
  • Complete at least 32 hours of training in an L&I-approved medical gas training course.
  • Provide proof of completing from your medical gas training course or a copy of your active National Inspection Testing and Certification Corporation (NITC) or Medical Equipment Training and Certification (METC) card.
  • Apply for your endorsement.

Apply online

To apply for your medical gas endorsement online, you will need:

  • Your Social Security number.
  • An active Journey Level plumber certification on file with L&I.
  • A copy of your certificate of completion from your medical gas training course or a copy of your active NITC/METC card on file with L&I.
    • You can email a copy for your certificate to plumbers@Lni.wa.gov or mail a copy to Plumber Certification, PO Box 44470, Olympia, WA 98504
  • An electronic payment. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express credit or debit cards. We also accept electronic checks (E-Check) - a one-time withdrawal from your checking account.
  • Required Fees
    • Application
      • $69.80 initial application, or
      • $189.80 for a retesting exam if your plumber certification has expired beyond 90 calendar days. (non-refundable).
    • Endorsement
      • $156.70 medical gas endorsement (payable after application is approved or you have passed the retest - you will receive an invoice once your application is approved).

Note: You cannot apply online if you have any outstanding, unpaid plumbing infractions.

Apply by mail

To apply for a first-time medical gas endorsement or the medical gas exam, print the Medical Gas Endorsement Application (F627-057-000) form and follow directions on the form.

Apply in person

You can apply in person at any L&I field office.

What L&I will do

  • Verify that the required information is on file with L&I.
  • Mail an approval notice requesting the endorsement fee, OR.
  • Mail a letter explaining the reason for denial.

*The late fee is a double fee that applies to late renewals or for those who haven't submitted their affidavit(s) of continuity by their renewal date.

** Effective 07/01/2021 24 hours must consist of a minimum of 12 hours of Plumbing Code (Code) and a minimum of 4 hours IRE. The other 4 hours may be from any category (Code, IRE, IRP).

If you pay your renewal fee on time but your affidavit(s) of continuity are not received on time, late fees will apply. You cannot pay late fees online. You must mail it in or pay at a service location.

90 calendar days after your certification expires: If you haven't paid your renewal fee and/or your affidavit(s) of continuity are not received on time, you must retest with the Department or complete the 32 hour course with an Authorized Medical GAs Trainer to reinstate your certification.

To re-apply with the Department an exam application and fee of $189.80 will be required.

OR

To complete your 32 hour course with an Authorized Medical Gas Trainer an exam application must also be completed with the exam fee of $189.80. Once you have completed and passed the 32 hour course you will need to provide the certificate of completion to the Department.

To activate your endorsement a first card fee of $156.70 must be paid in person or by mail to the Department for either option.

Renew Online

To renew your medical gas endorsement online, you will need:

  • Your 12 digit certification (license) number.
  • Your Social Security number.
  • An active Journey Level plumber certification and medical gas endorsement (not suspended or cancelled).
  • Your affidavit(s) of continuity for you required brazing periods on file with L&I.
    • Note: If you affidavits of continuity are not received by L&I by your expiration date, late fees will apply and you will be unable to renew online.
  • An electronic payment. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express credit or debit cards. We also accept electronic (E-Check) - a one-time withdrawal from your checking account.
  • Required fees
    • $156.70 medical gas endorsement renewal AND
    • $227.90 journey level plumber certification renewal.

Note: You cannot apply online if you have any outstanding, unpaid plumbing infractions, or your certificate is suspended.

Renew by mail

To renew your existing medical gas endorsement by mail, print the Medical Gas Renewal form (F627-019-000), and the Affidavit of Continuity Medical Gas Installation form (F627-043-000). Follow the instructions on the forms.

Renew in person

You can renew in person at any L&I field office.
