Overview

Trucking Injury Reduction Emphasis (TIRES)

The TIRES project, developed by the SHARP Program with support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) has ended after more than 15 years.

While new content is no longer being created through TIRES, all of our documents will remain here for your use. If you do not see a publication that you are looking for, email a request to SHARP@LNI.WA.GOV.

During the 15+ years of research in the trucking industry, the TIRES research team and our wonderful industry, labor, and educational partners developed many training documents, conducted multiple statewide surveys, and interviewed hundreds of truck drivers. Without the community of truck drivers and safety experts, we would not have successful.

Our last product, was the development of a customizable, online safety program for the trucking industry in Washington State.

We wish to thank all of our collaborators from business, labor, and the community of truckers who worked so hard to bring you all of this information. We hope that you found it useful.

Safety Program

TIRES Trucking Safety Program

The online TIRES Safety Program Development Tool enables trucking companies to create safety programs tailored to their specific mix of vehicles, equipment, and work environments. The tool is the result of a multi-year collaboration between TIRES staff, trucking industry safety experts, and software developers. Trucking has some of the highest injury rates among all industries. Having a company safety program is the best way to prevent injuries. Lack of one tops state workplace safety rule violations for Washington State trucking companies. Injury prevention and safety requirements compliance are harder for small to mid-sized companies to achieve with limited safety management resources. The TIRES Safety Program Development Tool is a free tool that uses data input from the company to create a customized safety program that exceeds basic state requirements. Nearly any short-haul and regional trucking company in Washington State can use the tool. For more information, read the following overview on keeptruckingsafe.org.
